LucidWorks pulls in $10M to turn open source data into ‘business gold’

Big Data software startup LucidWorks disclosed on Monday that has raised $10 million of a $12 million funding round.

LucidWorks has partnered with MapR Technologies, a Hadoop technology vendor, to deliver the integration between LucidWorks Search and MapR. This solution enables organizations to search their MapR Distributed File System (DFS) to discover actionable insights from information stored in Hadoop.

LucidWorks – Finalist for an American Technology Award

ata award finalistSometimes it’s unseemly to toot your own horn, but sometimes it would be wrong not to! LucidWorks has just been named a Finalist in the Software category of Tech America Foundation’s American Technology Awards. This latest accolade comes on the heels of several others, including being recognized with the 2012 Global Frost & Sullivan Entrepreneurial Company of the Year Award, being positioned in the “Challengers” Quadrant of Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Search, being named to UBM Tech Channel’s CRN 2013 Big Data 100 list, and being named to EContent Magazine's 2012 EContent 100.

All this great news isn’t the result of accident or luck. It comes from a great vision, a few smart decisions, and a ton of very hard work. And it’s been made possible because we offer the only enterprise-grade search development platforms built on the power of Apache Lucene/Solr open source search, which has a huge developer community full of incredibly brilliant people. We’ve nurtured the relationship with this community through our association with the Apache Software Foundation, and we employ more than a quarter of the committers to the Apache Lucene/Solr project, which goes a long way toward ensuring the platform evolves to meet the needs of customers and real-world use cases, which is why folks like Frost & Sullivan, Gartner and the others are so impressed.

It’s one thing for a company to tell its story. Yes, Lucene/Solr is the industry’s most widely used platform for writing real-time embedded search applications that can scale to handle billions of documents and high query volumes. It’s another thing when a slew of third-parties recognize you for what you’ve accomplished.

Here’s a big “thank you” to the LucidWorks team and our developer community. Together we’re truly redefining how people search for information.

LucidWorks Big Data 1.1.0 Released

I'm pleased to announce the immediate availability of LucidWorks Big Data 1.1.0 (download). While this is mostly a bug fix release, there are a few new features worth noting (read the release notes for more details):

Pig and HBase with LucidWorks Big Data

One of the goals of LucidWorks Big Data (LWBD) is to facilitate interoperation of components within the Hadoop ecosystem. One pathway we use commonly in LWBD is reading and writing data in HBase through Pig. At the most basic level, this is made possible through the HBaseStorage load/store backend provided by Pig. We have found there is a bit of an impedance mismatch between the way HBaseStorage returns records and the way Pig manipulates data. Specifically, HBaseStorage returns associative arrays (maps) corresponding to columns, but Pig is very record oriented and lacks support for map manipulation.

Find, Discover and Analyze the Value in Big Data

Great post by Paul Doscher, LucidWorks CEO at Wired.com about how new open source tools and interfaces are making it easier, and without a major investment, for developers to rapidly design, create and deploy prototype applications.

Finding the right solution requires building a framework around the needs of users and the business. You need to have deeper insights into users question,  by leveraging existing internal knowledge in a cost-effective way.

I've uncovered a new form of Identity Theft

Yesterday, I get an e-mail from one of our Apache Lucene/Solr committers asking me what I meant by my comment on the Apache JIRA. For those of you unfamiliar with this JIRA, it is where open source developers go to collaborate on Apache projects, post questions, new ideas for a project, and generally engage in thread discussions around the Apache projects.

LucidWorks Big Data now Integrated with MapR

See this new research note from Ventana Research discussing how LucidWorks Big Data connects with and integrates Mapr. The author, Mark Smith, discusses how LucidWorks Big Data integrates both MapR and key Apache Open Source technologies to produce a developer-friendly Big Data application platform.

LucidWorks Big Data & Oozie Workflow With VizOozie

In this post we will discuss how to create a visualized workflow graph for Oozie. Oozie is a workflow management system for Hadoop jobs. Oozie Workflow jobs are DAG (Directed Acyclical Graphs) of actions: http://oozie.apache.org
